  • "I took a Pilates basics class with Marty to help with some knee and back pain I'd been struggling with as a new mother and a farmer. Marty is a great teacher and gave me a simple, approachable set of pilates moves I could do at home that have really helped me get stronger and feel better. I hope to keep up the practice and return for future classes with Marty too. "

  • "I saw Marty to deal with neck and shoulder pain after years of slouching. I had just gotten top surgery and felt ready to improve my posture. They immediately understood my posture issues and where they came from. I felt safe and seen, which allowed therapy to actually work! I recommend Marty to everybody I know who deals with chronic pain, especially trans people!"

  • "What a difference working with Marty made— I took classes and private sessions and my Pilates technique improved and refined markedly . They even helped me get back to running! I enjoyed all the sessions."

  • "Embodied Therapies is a critical part of my holistic care as a person moving through long-term health challenges. I have seen Marty for MFR for over a year now and have benefitted from their Pilates teachings. They create a safe space that moves with consent on a cellular level. I send everyone I know to Embodied Therapies because their work is profound!"

  • "Marty is an extremely intuitive bodyworker. I always feel better after a MFR session with them. My body feels good, but the real gift is my calm nervous system. Marty’s bodywork allows me to find more space and clarity mentally as well as physically. I recommend them to others often. I have also had the pleasure of taking Pilates with Marty. They are an excellent teacher. They are very knowledgable, but not intimidating, and class is both fun and hard. You will be challenged, but nothing is taken too seriously. It’s a good time! I highly recommend. "

  • "Marty has a deep understanding of the human body and offers a very accessible and comprehensive service in their Pilates practice and MFR sessions. Would absolutely recommend them for any type of body work!"

  • "I have been working with Marty for about 2 years now for both pilates and MFR and have been very impressed with their skills, knowledge, professionalism and how my body is feeling. I had history of some back pain following an injury and with a baby and work that is bad on my back my goal was to prevent pain and increase my strength/flexibility. I can tell a huge difference in my range of motion and strength since starting working with them. I have not had any major flare ups since starting with them. When it has felt a bit tight I feel good about the MFR helping to release the tension and pilates helping to stabilize and support to help as well. "

  • "I have been seeing Marty for MFR for only a few months and the change in my health has been nothing short of amazing. I am active and fit, but had a couple of issues that kept me from feeling that way. They helped me with lymphedema in my right arm left over from breast cancer treatment. I have had to wear a compression sleeve and gauntlet every day for over 5 years. They not only worked directly on my arm with me, they also pointed out how the way I was wearing the sleeve and gauntlet may have been part of the problem. They were so right! I now only have to wear the sleeve intermittently and the gauntlet not at all. They has also worked me with on a balance problem I couldn't find the cause for, and I am almost free of that irritating issue as well. Both of these results are better than I ever thought possible."

  • "I have been to Marty for several MFR appointments, and I now see them in place of the massages I used to get. The pain relief I experienced after a massage used to last for a day or two at most, and then the tightness would return. MFR unclenches the fascia in a way that is achy at first, but ultimately leaves my body significantly more open and pain-free. Marty themself is a gifted practitioner. They are kind, gentle, and and professional without being precious, and their abilities as a MFR practitioner are deeply beneficial to my health."

  • "I've been having chronic back pain (with some connected pain in the abdominal area) for more than four years now, I was visited by a couple of general doctors in Germany who performed a series of tests (MRIs, ultrasound scans...) but never found a definitive cause for my pain. They sent me to physiotherapists who gave me massages and suggested exercises for my back, which I diligently did for months; moments in which I felt better alternated to others when the pain was acute again, and in general the whole process felt kinda like guess-driven (even though by competent people I respect). Eventually my partner and I started traveling again, I gave up on the exercises and at some point got to Durham. My visit at Embodied Therapies was a result of my partner's initiative, who booked me an appointment with Marty, as a present for my 33rd birthday. I feel so grateful towards both of them now! After a short introduction where Marty asked me about my condition and told me what Myofascial Release Therapy is about, I laid on a comfortable, warmed up massage table with a relaxing ambient music in the background. The session lasted about one hour, during which I got progressively more and more relaxed: one body part was treated for 5-10 minutes before proceeding with the next one, and at every switch I felt like my body was positively responding to Marty's work. They encouraged me to give them feedback if I needed to and they made sure that I always felt comfortable. In the end I felt like knowing more about this kind of therapy because I'll start traveling again soon and unfortunately I won't be able to schedule another appointment with Marty. I told them about my departure and they offered their help in finding MR therapists outside the US, and left me with some after-care advises. That reminded me that some humans care more about other humans rather than about money. Take care of yourself and the others, y'all!"

  • "Working with Marty has been so rewarding and effective. I have had chronic back pain for years and new aches and pains as I get older— and doing MFR therapy with Marty has been a game changer and I can’t stop talking about it. Also working with Marty feels like a true balanced partnership— they give a lot of informed guidance and expertise, but I always feel like I’m the one in the driver’s seat when it comes to my body and what needs to be addressed. As a fat client, (size 24ish in women’s), I also feel very comfortable and respected when I’m on the table— literally in good hands!I was a newbie to this modality and it took a little getting used to during my couple sessions, but I could feel such a difference. Highly recommend!"

  • "Pain is multi faceted, especially chronic pain. Alot of us out there struggle with it, and it can be expensive and exhausting to try and fix. I don't consider myself "old" but I'm pretty active, and it's all catching up to me. Some things pain wise just didn't help, and I wanted to heal my body beyond a pill. Chiropractic didn't help (not saying it isn't good, just wasn't for me), and acupuncture helped for many years along with massage therapy, but my pain had morphed into something new. That's when one of my acupuncturist recommended something that I had heard of but never fully explored...Myofascial therapy. Alot of body work practitioners will claim to offer myofascial release, but this is what Marty specializes in. That is all they do in that one hour of treatment, which really allows them to work on the facial release that you need. It's a special type of therapy that I don't think everyone fully understands and appreciates, but when you're in pain, I think it's worth a go to explore a treatment option by a trained specialist. The best part is Marty is such a kind and caring individual. They offer this service in a way that makes it accessible to all in a no judgment zone. I talked with them other day about what they do and the name of the practice, Embodied Therapies and I understood why they chose the name they did...while I can't speak to their Pilated offering, I can say their facial release helps me not feel like a stranger in my body anymore, I can approach my yoga, weight training and climbing as confidently as I did 5 years ago. It's a process working through old injures and chronic pain, some things work, some things don't, some things work some of the time but you'll never know until you try!"
